It is currently not possible to create TextureData outside the gl thread.

                public static void main(String[] args) throws MalformedURLException, IOException {
                BufferedImage image = ImageIO.read(new URL("http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/images/logo.gif"));
                AWTTextureIO.newTextureData(image, false);
                }

                throws
