The drivers bundled with the Debian squeeze image runs on framebuffer only. The default jogamp drivers expect libEGL that support opening windows using an xorg server.

sgothel have commited the 'BCM VC IV' driver that enables direct support for JOGL/NEWT on Rasperry PI console. Due to the lack of detection (TODO) users have to specify the Java property: 

 -Dnativewindow.ws.name=jogamp.newt.driver.bcm.vc.iv
